On March 1 – 5, 2012, ATD Fourth World Philippines is proud to host ONE VOICE, the ATD Asian Communication Forum. It will be conducted in the Cenacle Retreat House and UP Alumni Hostel, both located in Quezon City. A day prior to the forum, February 29, we will also have a formal launch of the Walking Exhibit: Larawan ng Pag-Asa in a venue at UP Diliman.

One Voice aims to enrich the participants not only with new communication tools but to write and tell the ATD story and message to their respective countries, communities, and the public. The Forum will be participated by 20-25 full time volunteers, friends, and community members (ATD families) in Asia. It will entail expenses particularly in the venues and the participants’ meals.

We are looking for sponsors in the following:

A First in Understanding Our People

Inspired by Channel News Asia’s “Asian of the Year” feature on Robert Alejandro, I attended All Together in Dignity (ATD) Third World Philippines’ Street Library project last January 21, 2012 at the streets of Pandacan, Manila and this experience awakened me to a lot of hopeful realities.

It was my first time to navigate the vibrant alleys of Pandacan and it was a pleasure to meet the community who lives under the bridge, especially the kids. I never really understood the situation of the street children and being inside their neighborhood and connecting with the families gave me a different perspective of the lives that they live.

I will never forget the shame that I felt when a foreign volunteer explained to me the situation of the community who reside under the bridge. He understood, I only knew. He educated me about the people of my own country. How could this be?

Sure, I saw them everyday when they knocked on the doors of the car or when they approached me when I was walking but I never really considered what they are going through. It was so easy to judge or be rude and turn them away but when I saw the condition of their homes and the environment that they thrive in, I understood that they have no choice.

This is where ATD comes in. I admire the organization’s advocacy of giving equal chances to the poorest of the poor. What they give are not hand-outs, they have sustainable programs such as the Street library which promotes education. This is another distinct trait that I love about ATD. Instead of soliciting donations to give to the underprivileged, what they ask from volunteers are their talents.

To be able to share your talents to the needy is a great privilege. It does not cost anything except time and effort. When you feel the enthusiasm of the kids to learn and their hunger for knowledge, you realize that the only difference between the rich and the poor is the chances that we are given.

The Forum aims to help and support the communication campaign of the different ATD Asian countries. Lakad Laban sa Kahirapan, Mga Larawan ng Pag-asa was launched last October 16, 2011 at the Rizal Park after the commemoration of the International Day for Overcoming Extreme Poverty.

The sketches were done by artist, former Probe Reporter and ATD Friend Robert Alejandro. The people portrayed marched along their banners.

Carmen, an OFW who teaches arts & crafts to youths living under the bridge.

International Day for Overcoming Extreme Poverty 2011

Here are photos from the commemoration held at Rizal Park last October 16, 2011.

Hundreds of people from different communities, civic organizations, and government agencies as well private citizens attended the commemoration.

Highlights include the testimonials of ATD community members and friends regarding their fight agains poverty, the performance of the Balatuba Boys (group of teenagers from a public cemetery) performing and composing a rap number for their friend who died due to violence and poverty, and the launch of the ATD Walking Exhibit: Lakad Laban sa Kahirapan, Mga Larawan ng Pag-asa.

Local and international officials graced the event like DSWD Secretary Dinky Soliman, NAPC Secretary Joel Rocamora and UN Resident Coordinator Jacqueline Badcock.

Oct. 17: International Day for Overcoming Extreme Poverty

All Together in Dignity (ATD) Fourth World Philippines and National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC) invite every one… all organizations, NGOs, companies, academe, students, and private individuals to commemorate October 17, International Day for Overcoming Extreme Poverty.

This year, the commemoration will be held on October 16, 2011 (Sunday) at the Commemorative Stone (near the Japanese Garden) at the Rizal Park.

What is Oct. 17?

On October 17, 1987, upon the appeal of Father Joseph Wresinski (a French Catholic priest and founder of ATD Fourth World Movement),
100,000 people gathered together on the Trocadero in Paris to honor victims of hunger, violence, and ignorance.

A Commemorative Stone in Honor of the Victims of Extreme Poverty, was inaugurated on this occasion on the Plaza of Human Rights and Liberties (formerly Trocadero Plaza), at the place where the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed in 1948 .

In 1992, the United Nations General Assembly declared October 17 as the International Day for Overcoming Extreme Poverty.

In the Philippines, Former Philippine President Fidel V. Ramos declared it as a National Day in 1993.

Activities

Aside from the main program, ATD will launch its Walking Exhibit: Lakad Laban sa Kahirapan, Mga Larawan ng Pag-Asa. It features sketches of people (families in poverty, ATD volunteers and friends) as drawn by award winning graphic artist and former Probe reporter, Mr. Robert Alejandro.

Other activities… Museo Pambata Mobile Library and Arts & Crafts workshops will be open to all the children.

We will be posting the final program very soon!

Share the Oct. 17 message via email & social network (Facebook & Twitter) and writing to media and blog sites. We have prepared some Oct. 17 Facebook messages on "Sharing" which will be available soon.

Join a commemoration in your community, school, church, and organization.

Organize a gathering, public walk, or other commemorative event, large or small. Be creative, while respecting the spirit of the day.

Observe a minute of silence in a significant place or a meeting happening that day.

Create a cultural event like a concert, play, and art exhibit in your community or school.

Call on your religious leaders and encourage them to promote times of prayer in recollection of the very poor’s suffering and their initiation of this day.

Write your own Testimony if you have experienced or seen the injustices of poverty and exclusion and share it to others.

Masayang Festival of learning 2011

Sharing the world’s knowledge

“Learning means understanding who one is and what one experiences, in order to share it with others. It means having experiences which are not humiliating, experiences of which one can be proud. It means being able to take part in what others do. All children, all young people want to learn, want to know how to work, to express themselves, want to carry the hope of their people.”

These sentences, told by Father Joseph Wresinski, are not ambitions; neither can we pretend achieving all of what they underline. But they are here to guide us in our actions and therefore for the Festival of learning as well. In Manila, with different members of ATD Fourth World and other volunteers, we spent some weeks preparing, meeting, visiting, crafting and finally living the Festival of learning with the members of three communities.

Would I have to keep one image, one memory in mind of the Festival of learning this year, I would keep this one: a police officer reading with a child. Most often, for these children, the experiences with the police are not positive. They can be chased away from the streets, the shops, because somehow their presence is disturbing to the rest of the society. Certain police officers don’t do this with great pleasure neither.
So giving the opportunity to each of them to meet differently, through “experiences which are not humiliating, but of which one can be proud” is essential: On a Saturday, four police officers, wearing their uniform, sat on the mats and read with the children. Then in their workshop, they did a storytelling, explained about their role in the community, the correct use of the whistle and weapon, the meaning of their badges. And when it started to rain, most of the children in the group didn’t go home, continued drawing the police logo, while being protected by the mats the officers were holding...

Among other persons who came have been a flight attendant, a nurse, a grooming specialist, a doctor, a group of students found of poetry, theatre, dance. Other times have been filled with music, computer workshop, storytelling, games and arts and crafts. All these persons and others came with the same wish to get to know children, youth, and adults from another reality and experience something positive with them.

Because we know the success of an activity is not done through teaching, but through respecting and loving. Then only teaching arises, from and for both sides, a definition of sharing.

A Festival of preparation!

Thank you to all the ones who came this week.

Here are some updates: In the office, the team, facilitators and some friends, have chosen the arts and crafts workshops, tested them and made one or two samples.

Another part of our week has been to continue being in contact with persons coming or wishing to share a workshop, who learned about the Festival of Learning through Facebook, Couchsurfing, Hands On Manila, or different personal contacts of ATD friends.

So far, to make a summary, among the persons we know will come and share a workshop, there are:

-A long time ATD friend who will come one day in Hilum 7-9years old and three days in Tulay with the youth.

-Grace with storytelling and puppet making (?) in North Cemetery

-Two police officers, one day in Hilum, 10-12yo

-Museo Pambata, one day in Hilum and Tulay, 7-9yo

-Ryan, a biologist teacher who will show experiments

-Joanne, who will show and have children 3-6yo experience grooming (washing hand, poney tail...)

-Theater/dance group for three days in NC, 7-9, 10-12, 12-15, 15+ yo

Still has to be confirmed but interested, some doctor students, a chemist, a storyteller, a nurse, a person who loves to make jewelry with paper mache, a dentist, an artist (which ‘sort’ we don’t know yet...:)

There are also different persons who wish to simply come and help facilitate what we will be doing.

Next week we will buy some material (donations welcome), put them in bags, label them a bit like this: “Hilum April 07, 3-6yo” – “Hilum April 07, 7-9yo” – “Hilum April 07, 10-12yo”.

If I count well, for Hilum and Tulay, the two first communities, it means we will prepare at least 18 bags.......

One week of brainstorming!

Hi everyone,

The end of the first week of preparation for the Festival of Learning is near. Brainstorming ongoing for 6 days na.

We have started having some ideas of activities, have two police staff who will share about their job, we are hoping to have a dentist, some drum players, storytellers....but we are still LOOKING EAGERLY for any person wishing to experience a sharing with the children and their families in any field (music, dance, theater, games,...).What about a nurse to have the children listen to lungs and heart, or take the blood pressure? etc...

Blog Roadshow with Youth

Part of ATD Philippines' activity is to create youth programs especially for the out-of-school youths.

We visited the youths living under the Bridge Qurino Avenue to see if they were interested in a blogging workshop.

Setting up a laptop, a portable screen, USB broadband and through the generosity of a friendly neighbor to plug our equipment, we were able to show the youths the word wide web (www)!

Artist and ATD friend Robert Alejandro conducted the very informal but fun discussion with the help of ATD volunteers Zabeth Lavrand & Guy Malfait, ATD friend Sana Sta. Ana and facilitator Cathy Doce.

Peace, Love and Joy came via the Christmas ateliers. The families made beautiful Christmas ornaments to adorn their houses. Here are some pictures of the Christmas ateliers/workshops with the ATD families conducted by an ATD friend, Carmen Perez.

25 paper plates had pasted ninyogami style angels
15 wooden beads glued to a chopstick became angels with fashioned beaded wings
14 felt angels, glittered and topped with knitted yarn for halo

October 17, International Day for Eradication of Poverty

Dear friends,

Every year on October 17th, the international community observes the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
This day is a key opportunity to think of the struggle against extreme poverty that takes place every day and of the role that everyone has to play in this fight. People living in extreme poverty have an equal right to endeavor alongside all citizens to create a better world where rights are respected for all.

People’s messages written on October 17:

"We are perhaps not directly to blame for the exclusion of millions of human beings, but we can become the agents of their inclusion.”
“We need to unite with those living in extreme poverty, and work together.”

In the world, different events will be held and will gather people from different cultures, faiths backgrounds who refuse to think poverty as a fatality.
In Manila, we invite you to join us at the commemoration led by NAPC, National Anti-Poverty Commission together with ATD Fourth World Philippines.

 In case you would not be able to join the ceremony at Rizal Park, Manila, here are some examples of October 17 celebrations, which give you inspiration for observance of the Day and for your own commitment. Teachers in some schools focus the lessons on the issue of poverty. Children send their poems and paintings to contribute to October 17. Homeless people gather in a train station in memory of their friends who have died. There are also silent walks organized with stops at historical landmarks that bear memory of the poor.

Dear Friends,

Every year All Together in Dignity (ATD) Fourth World Philippines conducts a fundraising event, Creative HeARTs, to support its various programs (Street Libraries, Festival of Learning, Forums, & Art Workshops). Part of the proceeds will also go to the families living in the poor communities in Manila.

On its third year, Creative HeARTs will feature handmade lanterns, parols (Christmas star lanterns), candle holders, and gift items using recycled materials. We need the following materials:

1) empty plastic soda bottles, size 1.5 liters
- preferably, pls. donate the green bottles (Zesto calamansi fruit soda or Sprite) and clear/transparent Zesto and Sarsi bottles

2) Starbucks napkins/tissues
- whenever you go to Starbucks, pls. request for many napkins

3) handmade papers (any size or color)

Festival of Learning 2010

From April 13 to May 09 2010, ATD Fourth World Movement Philippines will be organizing the Festival of Learning for the 21st consecutive year, for the children in four deprived areas of Manila.

We are pleased to invite you to come together and share your talents, time and ideas for activities, trips or anything that will make this summer vacation a great time for the children and their families. The festival aspires to build friendship and understanding between the poorest children and the adults from various backgrounds by sharing different avenues for learning.

It generally includes storytelling, arts and crafts workshops, drama sessions and presentations to unleash the children's potential. Outings with their families are also learning experiences and time to enjoy beauty of the nature.
However, it is also specific each year thanks to volunteers like you who join and share the best of their talents and passions.

Christmas Greetings

Dear friends,

This year 2009 remembered us that 20 years ago a Convention on the Rights of the Child has been pronounced by the United Nations.

In the Philippines, three children have gone to Geneva to deliver messages to the international community.

This summer, during the Festival of learning in their community, they have also expressed themselves.

Victor says:
‘’I have the right to have a family who will love me, so that in my studies they will be my inspiration. I have the right that my family will take care of me, and when I finish my education I will be the one to take care of them’’.

Leah tells us:
‘’I need the help of the government so I can defend my rights. I have the right to defend other people and myself’’.

We notice these children are aware of the role they can play, now and in the future, towards their family and the society in general, having rights and responsibilities. Once more they make us understand that we need to listen to them.

On the first week of December, ATD Tapori (the children's 'section' of ATD International Movement) planned a gathering of children to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). The meeting took place in ATD House in Treyvaux, Switzerland, a big chalet on top of the rolling hills of this town. The purpose was to allow the children to express their experiences. The 'friendship train' story started the meeting, which is bringing children together and no child left out, which is the spirit of the UNCRC. The next few days, the children were grouped to discuss their own experiences and write messages. The culmination of was a meeting with the United Nations Deputy High Commissioner on Human Rights Mrs. Kang on Dec. 8 in Geneva.

The activities are interactive - learning songs from the countries, crafts, going outdoors - visiting a nearby farm, sightseeing in the city of Frighbourg and playing in the snow!

ATD Philippines and Thailand sent children delegates. It was a heartwarming experience for all of them to meet children from all sectors of society!

Kanino ba ang CRC?
It is a three-day children's summit to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) was held at Museo Pambata in Manila from November 18 to 20, 2009. the summit brought together 50 children with ages ranging from 11 to 16 years old and living in different, often difficult situations.

The summit aimed to raise awareness on the Convention on the Rights of the Child by posing the question: “Kanino ba ang CRC?” Children participants, in plenary and in discussions in playshops, shared their views on the rights and responsibilities of a child and crafted messages to people and agencies concerned.

Museo Pambata continues its mission to promote and educate the public about the CRC through this summit. Creative playshops, song-writing and other child-centered techniques brought about awareness and commitment to promote and protect the rights of not only the delegates' but all children in the world. The summit is realized through partnerships with the Department of Social Welfare and Development, UNICEF, Council for the Welfare of Children, National Council for Social Development, Children's Lab, Department of Tourism and ChildHope Asia. Supporting private foundations and individuals include Children's Hour, Zuellig Foundation, Aldaba-Lim Foundation, Aldaba-Lim Foundation, Mr. Jimmy Pabalan and Dr. Guillermo Roman.

Participants came from 15 partner organizations namely: ERDA Foundation, ChildHope Asia, Children's Lab, Museo Pambata Children's Advocacy Program, ATD Fourth World Philippines and Thailand, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, Yakap sa Kaunlaran ng Bata, Inc.-Southern Luzon, Girl Scouts of the Philippines, CRIBS Foundation, Mangyaan Heritage Foundation of Calapan, Mindoro, Liwanag ng Kapayapaan Foundation, Inc., Asilo de San Vicente de Paul, ILOG Kinderhome in Ilog, Negros Occidental, and Very Special Arts International.

The playshops
The playshop design was crafted and developed by lead facilitator Bing Baguioro of Children's Lab and the Museo Pambata team led by MP President/CEO and early childhood educator, Nina Lim-Yuson. Their experience and expertise in early child care and development made way for a fun, creative and a totally interactive program where games through wordplay, acting, art therapy, and extemporaneous speaking were incorporated. Discussions and processing activities were lead by youth facilitators who are community workers, volunteers and guides from ERDA, ChildHope and Museo Pambata. To prepare for this daunting task, the youth facilitators (referred to as “Ate” or “Kuya” by the delegates), underwent workshops under Baguioro as early as June 2009.

Children take the main stage, adults take the backseat
The idea was to create a children's summit where peer educators will engage the participants in a child-to-child learning strategy to understand and promote their rights and responsibilities. Adults took a back seat as the delegates' chaperones were tasked to do an on-the-spot documentation workshop ably led by Brenda Martinez of Children's Lab. A theme song was recorded for the child delegates so they could easily remember the importance of their rights. The song was written by Inshallah Montero and put into music by Bam Van Gestel, both youth volunteers.

November 20, the last day of the summit, a party was held at Museo Pambata's Karapatan Hall. The party was for the CRC's 20th anniversary as November 20, 1989 was the day when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Child delegates read their birthday wishes for CRC. They had wishes for themselves, other children, their parents, teachers, other professionals such as health workers and police officers, their barangay officials and other policy makers. They made it known that CRC is everybody's responsibility, not just their own.

So much has been learned by the adult facilitators and chaperones who observed the three-day summit. Children always get along very well despite the differences in their background, culture and even in language. They do not exclude others, are willing and eager to learn, and always look on the bright side of life. They are vulnerable and need to be protected. One boy wish was for his mother to get proper medical care so she can take care of him.

Invisible Children, the exhibit
The outputs of the children are on view at the Museo Pambata from 26 November to 20 December. Entitled “Invisible Children,” the exhibit is part of Zero In, an annual project organized by a consortium of five museums and art galleries such as the Ayala Museum, Ateneo Art Gallery, Lopez Memorial Museum, Bahay Tsinoy and Museo Pambata. This year's theme is “Periphery”. The children's voices, through poems, letters, photographs, works of art and other visual presentations culled from the summit offer a view into the Filipino youth's struggle to live in spite of the most difficult circumstances.

The exhibit features candid photographs taken of children living in Bolivia, Peru, Central Africa, Madagascar and Europe; allowing the viewers to virtually experience the contrast between the very deprived environment of these children and the dignity that comes out from their behavior.

All the photographs were taken in countries where the ATD full time volunteers work hand in hand with families from marginalized communities.

The exhibit will run from November 12 to 24.

This November, ATD Fourth World Philippines will welcome two Thai children living in the slum areas of Bangkok. They are delegates to Museo Pambata’s International Children Summit in the Convention of the Rights of the Child (CRC)… Kanino ba ang CRC?

It will be the first trip of the children to the Philippines and they will be accompanied by a Thai facilitator who is fluent in English.

We are looking for volunteers to be translators to these two children during the convention.

Dear Friends,

October 17, International Day for Overcoming Extreme Poverty, is approaching.

The celebration of this day has been initiated in 1987 on the Human Rights Plaza in Paris by the poorest themselves, through ATD Fourth World, by the laying of a Stone in honor of the victims of poverty. In 1992, the United Nations has recognized it as an International day.

In the Philippines, the Government has declared it a National Day and even National Week for Overcoming Extreme Poverty from October 17 to 23.

Through the years we must not forget that this day primarily is the one for the voices of the poorest to be heard, and a day for people to learn through and with them how, together, we can build a future of peace and justice for all.

In the world, different events will be held and will gather people from different cultures, faiths, backgrounds who refuse to think poverty as a fatality.

In Manila, through the National Anti Poverty Commission, the Government organizes an official commemoration around the Replica of the Stone in Rizal Park (between the Auditorium and the Japanese garden).

Together with the families of the poor communities we are involved with,we invite you to join us for this Commemoration at 9 AM in Rizal Park.

June 21 - Senior Volunteers Assise in Manila

This June, ATD Fourth World Philippines is honored to be hosting the first Asian Regional Assise (General Assembly) of Senior ATD Volunteers.

A total of seventeen volunteers from Asia and France are participating in the Assise.

The first part of the Assise is visiting the different communities and meeting with the families and the ATD friends. The second part is a "private retreat" in Tagaytay where the senior volunteers will be reviewing, discussing and evaluating their commitment and goals for the movement.

We like to invite everyone (old and new friends) on:

Festival of Learning 2009

Last summer, the ATD volunteers and friends visited four communities for the Festival of Learning... a yearly activity where children in poverty participate in art workshops and summer excursions. This year's theme is the "Rights of the Child" in preparation for the 20th anniversary of the Declaration of the Children's Rights.

The unpredictable weather may have created some havoc in the schedule but this did not dampen the spirits of the families, volunteers, friends and especially the children.

In the four communities (Hilum, Lozada, North Cemetery and Under the Bridge in Quirino Avenue) , the children created beautiful artworks like paper flowers, picture frames, and animal caps. The older children created their very own "Rights of the Child" Journal. The wrote and drew their own interpretations of their rights.

The highlight of the Festival was making the Friendship Train using recycled shoe boxes and magazines. The Friendship Train is based from a children's book depicting friendship among children. After reading this book, the children from the different communities collaborated with each other in making their train.

What made this year's Festival truly special is participation of new friends and groups like the Minstrels of Hope, group of theater dance performers and "Sama Ka Na" (Japanese volunteers).

Till the next Festival of Learning, we hope more new friends can join us!

All about ATD Fourth World Philippines

All Together in Dignity (ATD) Fourth World is an international non-governmental organization with no religious or political affiliation who works with individuals and institutions to find solutions to eradicate extreme poverty. Working in partnership with people in poverty, ATD Fourth World’s human rights-based approach focuses on supporting families and individuals through its grass-roots presence and involvement in disadvantaged communities, in both urban and rural areas. It creates public awareness of extreme poverty and influence policies to address it.

History
It was founded in 1957 in a shantytown near Paris, France, by Fr. Joseph Wresinski (1917-1988) who grew up in poverty himself. Presently, ATD is in 30 countries around the world. It has consultative status with the United Nations and the Council of Europe, as a result of our long-term grass-roots commitment and poverty research work undertaken with poor individuals and families.

Award/Citation
On November 2008, ATD Fourth World was awarded an honourable mention of the prestigious UNESCO/Bilbao Prize for the promotion of a Culture of Human Rights. The award, given every two years, rewards the efforts of institutions, organizations and individuals that have made a particularly important contribution to the promotion of human rights through education and research, and through efforts to raise the awareness of decision-makers and the general public.

Philippines
ATD Fourth World Philippines has been in existence since 1989. Full time Swiss volunteer Johanna Stadelmann set up the Philippine office upon the invitation of then Secretary Estefania Aldaba-Lim of the Department of Social Welfare and Development. Through the assistance and support from friends and some organizations, ATD Philippines has established links with 4 Manila impoverished communities, namely North Cemetery, Hilum and Lozada in Pandacan, Ilalim ng Tulay (Under the Bridge) at Quirino Avenue in Paco. The team also regularly visits resettlement areas of some of the ATD families in Bulacan and Laguna which are located outside Metro Manila.

To honor victims of poverty, Commemorative Stones have been created in different ATD member countries. In the Philippines, there are three commemorative Stones: Manila (Rizal Park), Davao and Mizamis Occidental.

Presently, the Philippine team is composed of 4 full time volunteers: Sarah Ortega , Elisabeth Lavrand, Anne- Sylvie Laurent and Ruth Mores.

Programs:
In all the communities, ATD Philippines has the following regular programs:

1) Street Libraries
In the different communities, volunteers and friends conduct book reading and story telling, drawing and painting to stimulate the children's learning capability and creativity. The program is also designed to involve the older boys and girls to assist their younger siblings to express their potential skills and talents.

2) Forums/Workshops
In this gathering, the adults from the communities share and express their life experiences. It is also an opportunity to dialogue with people from other backgrounds and to build mutual understanding and respect.

3) Festival of Learning.
During summer months, ATD celebrates the Festival of Learning. It is an educational, recreational and cultural event for children who have less opportunity to enjoy the summer vacation. Activities include book reading, story telling, arts and crafts workshops, drama sessions and presentations to hone their potential talents. Outings with their families also provide sources of learning, time to enjoy beauty of nature and more importantly to celebrate life! Artists and friends are welcome to join and share the best of their talents and skills.

4) International Day for Overcoming Extreme Poverty.
Every year on October 17, the International Day for Overcoming Extreme Poverty, people from all sections of society gather together with people living in poverty to renew the call for a common commitment to overcome extreme poverty.

Aside from these programs, ATD has done Tapori campaigns or children programs. Tapori is a worldwide network of friendship between children of all backgrounds. The children exchange letters, art works, and other forms of communication to learn from each other. Through these exchanges, they are able to be connected despite distance, language, religion and culture.
One of ATD’s newest programs is mentoring and tutorial to out-of-school youths. This program was initiated borne out of the concern of many parents to prevent their children from taking drugs and sniffing rugby.

Fundraising
It has been a conscious action of ATD Philippines, in the past four years, to be semi-financially independent to be able to fund its local programs. Through the initiative and help of the friends, the team has conducted annual fundraising activities to raise money, create awareness in the poverty situation and to attract new friends to join the movement.
